Tishomingo is the county seat.

It was named after Douglas H. Johnston, a governor of the Chickasaw Nation, when it became a state on November 16, 1907.

The Texoma Region includes Johnston County.

The county has a total area of 658 square miles (1,700 km2), of which 643 square miles (1,670 km2) is land and 15 square miles (39 km2) (2.3%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
