The U.S. county of Johnson County is in the state of Illinois.
The 2010 census says that there are 12,582 people living there.
Vienna is the county city.It is in the southern part of Illinois, which is called “Little Egypt” by the people who live there.
In 1812, Randolph County was split into two parts to make Johnson County.
It was named after U.S. Congressman from Kentucky at the time, Richard Mentor Johnson.
Johnson led a Kentucky company at the Battle of the Thames in 1813. After the battle, he said that he had killed Tecumseh in a hand-to-hand fight.
Johnson went on to become the United States’ Vice President.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county is 349 square miles (900 km2) in size, with 344 square miles (890 km2) of land and 4.9 square miles (13 km2) of water (1.4%).
