Vernon is the county seat.
In 1817, Jennings County was made. It was named after Jonathan Jennings, who was the first governor of Indiana and served in Congress for nine terms. When the county was set up, Jennings was governor.
According to the 2010 census, the county covers a total area of 378.34 square miles (979.9 km2), of which 376.58 square miles (975.3 km2) (or 99.53%) is land and 1.76 square miles (4.6 km2) (or 0.47%) is water.
