Jefferson County is a county in the state of Washington in the United States.
As of the census in 2020, there were 32,977 people living there.
Port Townsend is the only city in the county. It is also the county seat.
Thomas Jefferson’s name is on the county.
On December 22, 1852, the government of Oregon Territory took the northern 4,854 square miles (12,571.8 km2) of the Olympic Peninsula from Thurston County and made it its own county.
On April 26, 1854, the Washington Territory government took the northwestern 2,670 square miles (6,915.3 km2) of this area and made it into Clallam County.
Washington’s Jefferson County and Kitsap County are linked by the Hood Canal Bridge.
The county is connected to Whidbey Island in Island County, Washington, by the Washington State Ferries line from Coupeville to Port Townsend.
The US Census Bureau says that the county covers 2,183 square miles (5,650 km2), of which 1,804 square miles (4,670 km2) are land and 379 square miles (980 km2) are water, or 17%.
