It is an exurban county.
As of the census in 2020, there were 54,683 people living there.
Dandridge is the county seat.
Jefferson County and the counties next to it, Grainger and Hamblen, are all part of the Morristown Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The county is part of the Knoxville-Morristown-Sevierville Combined Statistical Area, along with the Morristown MSA.
The county has a total area of 314 square miles (810 km2), of which 274 square miles (710 km2) are land and 40 square miles (100 km2) (13%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
There are two man-made lakes in the county.
In the south, the French Broad River was dammed to make Douglas Lake, and in the north, the Holston River was dammed to make Cherokee Lake.
