Waurika is the county seat.
When the state was made, the county was made and named after President Thomas Jefferson.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county covers 774 square miles (2,000 km2), of which 759 square miles (1,970 km2) are land and 15 square miles (39 km2) are water, or 2%.
Beaver and Mud creeks in the county flow into the Red River.
In 1971, Beaver Creek in the northwest corner of Jefferson County was dammed to make Waurika Lake.
