The population was 14,779 at the time of the 2020 census.
Hazlehurst is the county seat.
On August 18, 1905, the county was established and named after Jefferson Davis, the only Confederate president.
The county has a total area of 335 square miles (870 km2), of which 331 square miles (860 km2) is land and 4.7 square miles (12 km2) (1.4%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
