Jasper County is the southernmost county in South Carolina, United States.
The population was 28,791 at the time of the 2020 census.
Ridgeland is the county seat, and Hardeeville is the largest city.
The county was formed in 1912 by combining parts of Hampton and Beaufort counties.
The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton-Port Royal, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area includes Jasper County.
It is situated in the state’s Lowcountry region.
In contrast to neighboring Beaufort County, Jasper was one of the poorest counties in the state for many decades.
Since the year 2000, the county has gained new residents, expanded business opportunities, and a larger tax base.
The county has a total area of 699 square miles (1,810 km2), of which 655 square miles (1,700 km2) is land and 44 square miles (110 km2) (6.3%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
