Black River Falls is the county seat.

It was in 1853 that Crawford County turned into Jackson County. It was named after Andrew Jackson, who was president.

The county covers 1,000 square miles (2,600 km2), with 988 square miles (2,560 km2) of land and 13 square miles (34 km2) (1.3%) of water.
