Jackson County is a county in South Dakota, United States.
The population was 2,806 at the time of the 2020 census.
Kadoka is the county seat.
The county was established in 1883 and incorporated in 1915.
In 1983, Washabaugh County merged with Jackson County.
Jackson County’s terrain consists of mountains rising from rolling hills.
The terrain is arid and riddled with drainages. The White River flows eastward through the center, carving a meandering channel.
The terrain generally slopes to the northeast; the highest point is a ridge near the southwest corner, at 3,274 feet (998 meters) above sea level.
The total area of Jackson County is 1,871 square miles (4,850 km2), of which 1,864 square miles (4,830 km2) is land and 7.4 square miles (19 km2) (0.4%) is water.
