On December 21, 1837, the county was made, and it was named after US President Andrew Jackson.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county is 650 square miles (1,700 km2) in size, with 636 square miles (1,650 km2) of land and 14 square miles (36 km2) of water, or 2.1%.
The Mississippi River runs along its eastern edge.
