Jackson County is a county in the U.S. state of Illinois.

As of the 2020 census, there were 52,974 people living there.

Its county seat is in Murphysboro, and Carbondale, where the main campus of Southern Illinois University is, is its most popular city.

On January 10, 1816, the county was made official, and it was named after Andrew Jackson.

Brownsville was the first county seat when the county was just getting started.

Jackson County is a part of the Metropolitan Statistical Area of Carbondale-Marion, IL.

It is in the southern part of Illinois, which is called “Little Egypt” by the people who live there.

The US Census Bureau says that the county is 602 square miles (1,560 km2) in size, with 584 square miles (1,510 km2) of land and 18 square miles (47 km2) of water, or 3.0%.

The normal height is about 400 feet (120 m), except where the Mississippi River is.

On the south side of the Big Muddy River, near where the Route 127 Bridge is now, the first coal mine in Illinois was opened.
