Fulton is the county seat.
The county is part of the Micropolitan Statistical Area of Tupelo, Mississippi.
It was named after the Chickasaw leader Itawamba, who was called Levi Colbert by English-speaking settlers.
During the Indian Removal of the early 1800s, he was a well-known person, but he died before his people left the area.
The US Census Bureau says that the county covers 540 square miles (1,400 km2), of which 533 square miles (1,380 km2) are land and 7.7 square miles (20 km2) are water, or 1.4%.
