The population was 45,014, according to the 2020 census.
Grand Rapids serves as the county seat.
The county is named after Lake Itasca, which is a shortened version of the Latin words veritas caput, which means “truth” and “head,” referring to the Mississippi River’s headwaters.
The county includes portions of the Bois Forte and Leech Lake Indian reservations.
The county covers an area of 2,928 square miles (7,580 km2), of which 2,668 square miles (6,910 km2) is land and 260 square miles (670 km2) is water (8.9%).
It is Minnesota’s third-largest county in terms of land area.
