Iron County is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
As of the 2020 Census, there were 11,631 people in the area.
Crystal Falls is the county seat.
In 1885, Marquette and Menominee counties split up some of their land to make Iron County. In 1890, there were 4,432 people living in the county.
It got its name from the valuable iron ore that was found there.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county is 1,211 square miles (3,140 km2) big, with 1,166 square miles (3,020 km2) of land and 45 square miles (120 km2) of water, or 3.7%.
It is one of only two counties in the Upper Peninsula that can’t get to the water.
The other is Dickinson County, which is to the southeast.
