A county in the U.S. state of South Dakota is called Hyde County.
As of the 2020 census, there were 1,262 people living there.
This made it the second-least populous county in South Dakota. Highmore is the county seat.
The county was made in 1873 as a part of the Dakota Territory, and it was officially set up in 1883.
It was named after a politician from the 1870s, James Hyde.
On January 8, 1873, the territorial legislature split off part of Buffalo County to make Hyde County.
That action did not put it together. In October 1879 and February 1883, changes were made to its borders.
On November 5, 1883, the positions for the county organization were filled, and the county began running on its own.
Hyde County has a total area of 866 square miles (2,240 km2), of which 861 square miles (2,230 km2) are land and 5.6 square miles (15 km2) (0.6%) are water.
