The county was established in 1862 and incorporated in 1871, and it was named after John Hutchinson, the first territorial secretary.
The James River runs through the center of Hutchinson County, flowing south-southeast.
The county’s terrain is made up of rolling hills, with agriculture being the primary industry.
The terrain slopes to the river valley on both sides, with the county’s highest point at 1,880′ (573m) ASL in the southwest corner.
