Hughes County is a county in South Dakota, which is a state in the United States.

As of the 2020 census, there were 17,765 people living there.

This made it the nation’s least populous capital county and South Dakota’s 12th most populous county.

Its county seat is in Pierre, which is also the capital of the state.

The county was made in 1873, and in 1880, it was put together. It was named after a member of Congress named Alexander Hughes.

On June 4, 1891, Farm Island, which is in the Missouri River downstream of Pierre, was added to the county, making it bigger.

The Pierre, SD Micropolitan Statistical Area includes Hughes County.

Most of the land in the county slopes toward the southeast, but the hills on the west slope down into the river valley. At 1,952 ft (595 m) ASL, the highest point of the county is on the upper part of the east boundary line.

The county is 801 square miles (2,070 km2) in size, with 742 square miles (1,920 km2) of land and 59 square miles (150 km2) of water, or 7.4%.
