Huerfano County, which is pronounced [wefano] in Spanish, is a county in the U.S. state of Colorado.
As of the census in 2020, there were 6,820 people living there.
Walsenburg is the county seat.
The name of the county, which comes from the Spanish word huĂ©rfano, which means “orphan,” comes from the nearby Huerfano Butte.
When large coal deposits were found in Huerfano County at the beginning of the 1900s, the area grew quickly. When coal use for World War II ended in the 1940s, Walsenburg and Huerfano’s economies kept going down until 2015.
