The county is named after Claude Benton Hudspeth, who was an El Paso state senator and a U.S. representative.
It is northeast of where the U.S. and Mexico meet.
The El Paso Metropolitan Statistical Area has Hudspeth County as a part of it.
The county has a total area of 4,572 square miles (11,840 square kilometres), of which 4,571 square miles (11,840 square kilometres) are land and 0.8 square miles (2.1 square kilometres) (0.02%) are water.
It has the third most land size of any county in Texas.
In the northeast area of the county is a part of Guadalupe Mountains National Park.
