Houston County is a county in the state of Texas in the United States.
As of the census in 2020, there were 22,066 people living there.
Crockett is the county seat.
Before a special election in November 2007, voters in Houston County made it legal to sell alcohol in the county.
Before that, it was one of 46 counties in Texas that didn’t allow any alcohol to be sold.
On June 12, 1837, the Republic of Texas, which was in power for nine years, made Houston County the first new county.
The original borders of Houston County also included all of what is now Anderson County, all of what is now Trinity County, and parts of what is now Henderson County and Polk County.
Sam Houston was the President of the Republic of Texas and the Governor of Texas. The county is named after him.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county has a total area of 1,237 square miles (3,200 km2), of which 1,231 square miles (3,190 km2) are land and 5.7 square miles (15 km2) (0.5%) are water.
