Hopkins County was named after the Hopkins family, an early resident in the area. Sulphur Springs, TX Micropolitan Statistical Area includes Hopkins County.
Hopkins County was previously renowned as Texas’ Dairy Capital. Although the number of dairy farms in the area fell in the late 1990s, there are still a few of them.
Sulphur Springs is home to the Southwest Dairy Museum.
The county has a total area of 793 square miles (2,050 km2), of which 767 square miles (1,990 km2) is land and 26 square miles (67 km2) (3.2%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
