As of the United States Census of 2020, there were 711 people living there.
Its county seat is Mullen, which is also the only large town in the county as of 2019.
Hooker County was made in 1889 when the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad put in a line through the area.
It was named after General Joseph Hooker from the Civil War.
