Holmes County is a county in the U.S. state of Mississippi, with the Yazoo River forming its western border and the Big Black River forming its eastern border.
The Yazoo-Mississippi Delta runs through the western part of the county.
According to the 2020 census, the population was 17,000 people.[1] Lexington serves as the county seat.
The county is named after David Holmes, the territorial governor and the first governor of Mississippi, as well as a United States Senator from Mississippi.
Edmond Favour Noel, a Holmes County native, was an attorney and state politician who was elected governor of Mississippi from 1908 to 1912.
The county has a total area of 765 square miles (1,980 km2), of which 757 square miles (1,960 km2) is land and 7.9 square miles (20 km2) (1.0%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
