It is named after George Washington Hockley, the Republic of Texas’ secretary of war.
The Levelland Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Hockley County, is part of the Lubbock-Levelland Combined Statistical Area.
Hockley County was established in 1876 by combining parts of Bexar and Young Counties.
It was named after George Washington Hockley, the artillery commander at the Battle of San Jacinto and later Secretary of War for the Republic of Texas.
