Logan is the county seat.
Land from Athens, Fairfield, and Ross counties was used to make the county on March 1, 1818.
It gets its name from the Hocking River, whose name comes from a Delaware Indian word that means “bottle river” but whose origins are not clear.
The Columbus, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area has Hocking County as a part of it.
The county has a total area of 424 square miles (1,100 km2), of which 421 square miles (1,090 km2) are land and 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2) (0.5%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
