Athens is the county seat.
The county is named for James Pinckney Henderson, the Republic of Texas’s first attorney general and secretary of state. He later became Texas’ first governor.
Henderson County was formed in 1846, the year Texas became a state. Its first town, Buffalo, was established in 1847.
Henderson County is part of the Athens micropolitan statistical area, which is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth combined statistical area.
The county has a total area of 948 square miles (2,460 km2), of which 75 square miles (190 km2) (7.9%) are covered by water.
