Henderson County was founded from a section of Warren County in 1841.
It was named after Henderson County, Kentucky, which was named after Richard Henderson, the founder of the Transylvania Company, an early attempt to organize what would ultimately become Kentucky in 1775.
The county has a total area of 395 square miles (1,020 km2), of which 379 square miles (980 km2) is land and 16 square miles (41 km2) (4.1%) is water, according to the US Census Bureau.
