Hart County is a county in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
It is in the south central part of the state. As of the census in 2020, there were 19,288 people living there.
Its county seat is in Munfordville, and Horse Cave is its biggest city.
Hart County is a “dry” or “no alcohol” county.
In 1819, parts of Hardin County and Barren County were put together to make Hart County.
Captain Nathaniel G. S. Hart, a Kentucky military officer in the War of 1812, was hurt at the Battle of Frenchtown and died in the Massacre of the River Raisin.
The county is named after him.
During the American Civil War, the Confederates won the Battle of Munfordville, which took place in the county in 1862.
The US Census Bureau says that the county covers a total area of 418 square miles (1,080 km2), of which 412 square miles (1,070 km2) are land and 5.8 square miles (15 km2) (1.4% of the total area) are water.
