The population was 7,495 as of the 2020 census, making it Oregon’s sixth-least populous county.
Burns is the county seat.
The county was named after William S. Harney, a military officer of the time who was involved in the Pig War and well-known in the Pacific Northwest.
The county has a total area of 10,226 square miles (26,490 km2), of which 10,133 square miles (26,240 km2) is land and 93 square miles (240 km2) (0.9%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
It is the largest county in Oregon and the tenth-largest county in the United States (excluding Alaska boroughs and census areas).
