Harding County is a county in South Dakota, United States.

The population was 1,311, as of the 2020 census, making it South Dakota’s third-least populous county.

Buffalo serves as the county seat.

Harding County is located in northwest South Dakota. Its western boundary line borders the state of Montana’s east boundary line, and its northern boundary line borders the state of North Dakota’s south boundary line.

Its terrain is made up of high hills that slant eastward. At 3,366 feet (1,026 meters) above sea level, its highest point is a ridge that runs northwest to southeast near the county’s southwest corner.

Harding County is 2,678 square miles (6,940 km2) in size, of which 2,671 square miles (6,920 km2) is land and 6.5 square miles (17 km2) (0.2%) is water.

It is the fourth-largest county in South Dakota in terms of land area.
