Hardin County is a county in the U.S. state of Kentucky’s central region.

Elizabethtown is the county seat.

The county was established in 1792.

Hardin County is included in both the Elizabethtown-Fort Knox, KY Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Louisville/Jefferson County—Elizabethtown-Bardstown, KY-IN Combined Statistical Area.

The population was 110,702 according to the 2020 census.

Hardin County is well known as the birthplace of former United States President Abraham Lincoln, however the area is now in nearby LaRue County.

Hardin County was formed in 1792 from land divided from Nelson County.

Hardin was the 15th Kentucky county to be established.

The county is named for Col. John Hardin, a Continental Army leader during the American Revolution and the brother of Hardinsburg founder Capt. William Hardin.

The county has a total area of 630 square miles (1,600 km2), of which 623 square miles (1,610 km2) is land and 6.9 square miles (18 km2) (1.1%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.

It is Kentucky’s fourth-largest county in terms of land area.
