Hardin County was named after Hardin County, Kentucky, which was named for Colonel John Hardin, an officer in the American Revolutionary War and the Northwest Indian War.
The U.S. Census Bureau says that the county is 182 square miles (470 km2) in size, with 178 square miles (460 km2) of land and 4.1 square miles (11 km2) of water, or 2.2%. It has the second-smallest land size of any county in Illinois.
