Hancock County is a county in West Virginia, which is a state in the United States.
As of the census in 2020, there were 29,095 people living there.
Its county seat is in New Cumberland, and Weirton is its biggest city.
In 1848, the county was made out of Brooke County.
It was named after John Hancock, who was the first person to sign the Declaration of Independence.
Hancock County is the northernmost part of West Virginia and, by some standards, the southernmost part of the United States.
It is at the tip of the Northern Panhandle of the state. Hancock County is part of the Weirton-Steubenville, WV-OH Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also part of the Pittsburgh-New Castle-Weirton, PA-WV-OH Combined Statistical Area.
The US Census Bureau says that the county covers a total area of 88 square miles (230 km2), of which 83 square miles (210 km2) are land and 5.4 square miles (14 km2) are water, or 6.1%.
