It is named for John Hancock, one of the Founding Fathers.

Bay St. Louis is the county seat.

It is on the Gulf of Mexico and the border between Texas and Louisiana.
The John C. Stennis Space Centre, which tests rocket engines for NASA, is in this area.
Hurricane Katrina hit on August 29, 2005, and caused a huge storm surge and a lot of terrible damage to the county.
The county has a total area of 553 square miles (1,430 km2), of which 474 square miles (1,230 km2) are land and 79 square miles (200 km2) (14%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
