Anderson is the county seat.

In 1846, the county was established from Montgomery County.

The county is named for Jesse Grimes, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and early European-American pioneer.

The county has a total area of 802 square miles (2,080 km2), of which 14 square miles (36 km2) (1.8%) is covered by water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
