The county was made on March 24, 1803.

It was named after a Revolutionary War officer, General Nathanael Greene.

Greene County is in the Metropolitan Statistical Area of Dayton, Ohio.

The US Census Bureau says that the county is 416 square miles (1,080 km2) in size, with 414 square miles (1,070 km2) of land and 2.5 square miles (6.5 km2) of water (0.6%).
