In 1930, the US Census Bureau found that the mean center of the U.S. population was in the county.
In 1821, Greene County was made out of unorganized land and a piece of the old Sullivan County.
It was named after General Nathanael Greene, who was in charge of the southern theater of the American Revolutionary War.
This caused Charles Cornwallis and the British army to retreat to Yorktown. There, it was forced to give up, which made sure that the United States would be free.
According to the 2010 census, the county has a total area of 545.92 square miles (1,413.9 km2), of which 542.50 square miles (1,405.1 km2) (or 99.37%) are land and 3.42 square miles (8.9 km2) (or 0.63%) are water.
