Milbank is the county seat.
The county was established in 1873 and incorporated in 1878.
It is named after the 18th President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant.
Grant County is located in eastern South Dakota. Its east boundary line borders the state of Minnesota’s west boundary line.
The terrain is made up of rolling hills that slope northeast. Agriculture dominates the landscape.
At 2,014 ft (614 m) ASL, the highest point of the terrain is on the county’s south boundary line, towards its southwest corner.
Grant County is 688 square miles (1,780 km2) in size, with 681 square miles (1,760 km2) of land and 6.1 square miles (16 km2) (0.9%) of water.
The lowest point in South Dakota is located on Big Stone Lake in Grant County, near Ortonville, Minnesota, where the lake flows into the Minnesota River.
