The county was named after Henry Stuart, Duke of Gloucester (the third son of King Charles I of England) and was established in the Virginia Colony in 1651.
Gloucester County is part of the Virginia Beach-Northern Virginia-Newport News, VA-NC Combined Statistical Area.
The county has a total area of 288 square miles (750 km2), of which 218 square miles (560 km2) is land and 70 square miles (180 km2) (24.4%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
