Gilpin County is the smallest county in Colorado, behind only the City and County of Broomfield in terms of land area.

The population was 5,808 at the time of the 2020 census.

Central City is the county seat.

Founded in 1861 while Colorado was still a Territory, the county was named for Colonel William Gilpin, the first territory governor.

Gilpin County is included in the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Combined Statistical Area.

The county has a total area of 150 square miles (390 km2), of which 150 square miles (390 km2) is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2) (0.2%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.

It is Colorado’s second-smallest county in terms of land area.
