Gilmer County is a county in West Virginia, which is a state in the United States.
As of the 2020 census, there were 7,408 people living there.
This made it the fifth least populated county in West Virginia. Glenville is the county seat.
The county was made in 1845 from parts of Lewis County and Kanawha County.
It was named for Thomas Walker Gilmer, who was Governor of Virginia from 1840 to 1841.
Gilmer later became a member of Congress and a member of President John Tyler’s cabinet as Secretary of the Navy.
The US Census Bureau says that the county is 340 square miles (880 km2) in size, with 339 square miles (880 km2) of land and 1.6 square miles (4.1 km2) of water (0.5%).
