Gilmer County is a county in the north central region of the United States’ state of Georgia.

The population was 31,353 at the time of the 2020 census.

Ellijay is the county seat.

It was inspired by an eighteenth-century Cherokee settlement also known as Elejoy.

The county was named after George Rockingham Gilmer, a statesman who served two non-consecutive terms as governor of the state, on December 3, 1832.

The county has a total area of 431 square miles (1,120 km2), of which 427 square miles (1,110 km2) is land and 4.7 square miles (12 km2) (1.1%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.

The Blue Ridge Mountains surround the county.

The great portion of Gilmer County is located in the ACT River Basin’s Coosawattee River sub-basin (Coosa-Tallapoosa River Basin).
