The population was 24,350 at the time of the 2020 census.Lucedale is the county seat.

The county is named after Mississippi Senator James Z. George.

George County is part of the Pascagoula, MS Combined Statistical Area.

The county is close to the state line with Alabama.

George County was formed on March 16, 1910, from portions of land previously included in Jackson and Greene Counties and was named after Senator James Z. George.

On its way to Mobile, the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad passed through Lucedale.

The county has a total area of 484 square miles (1,250 km2), of which 479 square miles (1,240 km2) is land and 4.9 square miles (13 km2) (1.0%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
