Chardon is the county seat and the largest city.

The county is named after an Onondaga or Seneca language word that means ‘raccoon,’ which was originally the name of the Grand River.

Geauga County is included in the Cleveland, OH Combined Statistical Area.

The county has a total area of 408 square miles (1,060 km2), of which 400 square miles (1,000 km2) is land and 8.1 square miles (21 km2) (2.0%) is water.
