Gates County is part of the Metropolitan Statistical Area of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Newport News, VA-NC. It is part of the Inner Banks area of Albemarle Sound.
The county has a total area of 346 square miles (900 km2), of which 340 square miles (880 km2) are land and 5.2 square miles (13 km2) (1.5%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
