Hermann has been the county seat since 1842.

The county is situated on the south bank of the Missouri River, which was once the primary mode of transportation in the state. It is situated in the Missouri Rhineland region.
The Hermann area was designated an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1983 due to its unique conditions.
The county’s southern portion is included in the larger Ozark Highlands AVA, which was established in 1987.
The county has a total area of 524 square miles (1,360 km2), of which 518 square miles (1,340 km2) is land and 6.6 square miles (17 km2) (1.3%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
