William D. Gauge was a Methodist minister who was the first chaplain of the Nebraska Territorial Legislature. The county was named after him.

The Lincoln-Beatrice, NE Combined Statistical Area is made up of the Lincoln-Beatrice, NE Micropolitan Statistical Area as well as the Beatrice, NE Micropolitan Statistical Area.

The US Census Bureau says that the county covers a total area of 860 square miles (2,200 km2), of which 851 square miles (2,200 km2) are land and 8.5 square miles (22 km2) (1%) are water.
