McConnellsburg is the county seat.[2] On April 19, 1850, the county was formed from a portion of Bedford County and named after inventor Robert Fulton.
The county has a total area of 438 square miles (1,130 km2), of which 438 square miles (1,130 km2) is land and 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2) (0.1%) is water, according to the United States Census Bureau.
