Sidney is the county town.

The county was made in 1847 and named after the military leader John C. Fremont.

The county has a total area of 517 square miles (1,340 km2), of which 511 square miles (1,320 km2) are land and 5.5 square miles (14 km2) (1.1%) are water, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
